EDITING: 14/11/2013

Today we did not edit in our usual class room as we went to the video editing suite; editing in this room gave us a lot more room which we would have normally as we had three screens per group and therefore we could all see the screen properly and therefore put in ideas as to how the editing should go. Today we tested out editing as we previewed how jump cuts looked. The jump cuts which we tested out will not be the way we tested out today as today we tested them at random. At the same time as starting to editing we I tried to also blog to make use of all the time we had with the mac laptops.

We also found that some base tracks were not in sing and therefore had to re-mark some of the footage so that when it comes to properly editing and cutting parts out it would be so much easier.

PLANNING: More Synergy

Whilst looking at videos in my spare time I came across an advert which I really liked. This is a lipstick ad which I thought would be great for synergy. I liked the way music ( beat-boxing) combined with lipsticks and therefore makes this advert really outstanding and may persuade people to buy the lipstick.

I would use all the bright colours used in this advert as they are all stand out. Additionally in pop music videos the makeup/lipstick that is worn by the artist tends to be bright colours such as pink, red, purple, orange and so on.

PRODUCTION: 13/11/2013

Today we shot our final base-tracks. Todays footage was mainly for the beginning of the music video however we shot base-tracks of the whole music video in case any parts of the footage was not properly lip singed  or did not look nice. We went out to film during lunch time as we had lessons after lunch and intended to start editing in the next lesson which is tomorrow.

For this scene I was wearing a cream dress, leggings and wedges although you can not notice the footwear in the footage. I was still wearing the red/pink lipstick as it is our synergy product however left out the red scarf as I felt it looked rather weird.

Shooting the footage took us the whole of lunchtime which was about one hour so we was not late for our lessons. In this location I sat on a tree rather than a bench; this was a very good idea and looked great when looking back at the footage. The scenery in this location looked very nice; we established that we had more than one scene near a tree and we were supposed to be exposing the city. It was alright to have scenes near tree because through research I found that Ellie Gouldings music was inspired by loneliness therefore it still looked good with the music and we still do have shots in iconic locations.

Here is one of the pictures taken by Amirul showing that the artist (myself) is getting ready to start filming. Edadul was in charge of holding the music in order for the camera as well as the artist to be able to hear it. Through this picture the bright colours of the grass and leaves are shown which is great because it goes with the genre pop - bright.

RESEARCH (additional) - Music Videos with a difference

Gym Class Heroes: Stereo Hearts ft Adam Levine

 In this music video the camera movement is very    static and the reason to this could be the fact it is heavily stylised by the edits. The use of green-screen may have been used so the artist had to stay in a specific place to get the edit to match. The main special effect used was with the shadows of the artists when breaking the shadow in half to represent his heart for example.

* This brings us back to our own music video some parts work when camera is not moving as much because the artist is moving and camera might not need to move. Some of the shots i did was to just make sure the artist stays in the close up shot so i did not really go into moving about too much but i did follow the artist when she did move slightly out of the shot which did make the shot a little bad because the artist would move out of the frame.

Maroon 5 - One More Night

 In this video there is a movement of the camera but the style of this music video is a whole narrative you do not see the artist sing at all. The reason for this could be that the artist is very well recognised and has a lot of screen time in the narrative music video. The convention of music videos do still apply with jump cuts that also tell a story as it goes along.

* In our own music video we are able to move about with the character especially at the Tate Modern outside with the white trees we had to move in and out of the trees to see the artist singing. The main focus was to make sure we the lips moving.

So these are the two videos I recently looked at to get some ideas when editing our own blog. I am trying to stay away from Ellie Goulding music videos because we may end up just copying the style she uses for some music videos. As a group we are not sure at this stage if we should have stylized or keep it natural and just put it together yet i beleieve the idea of having a split screen would make our music video a little more unique. 

EDITING - Matching & Synchronising

DAY 2 of EDITING

So it's the second day of editing. We are just finished putting in the BASE-TRACKS and in-sync them with the Ellie Goulding song of our choice (as predicted the song is gradually getting 'annoying' but still manageable). Soon as I got in the media room I got straight on the Macs and began to put them together however there were some problems that discovered.

Problems:

 1) First problem I encountered was the fact that some clips started at different lines of the song. Sort of the things we did not consider when filming the base tracks. However the SOLUTION was to just pick another key word to add the marker.

2) The generally problem was that when our artist (Yasmin Feruz) mimes the song it was hard to see her pronounce some of the words so thats another reason i had to choose another word and make a marker for that on the song and on the clip. This is all because we did not get the artist to actually try to sing although our artist did at least whisper the lyrics to remind herself of the words to the song.

3) Another problem was that some clips started off with the shot being of her jewellery or something other than the artists face; this was usually at the beginning of the camera shot and the same solution was to pick another key word.

Problem 3 

 BUT:

We have completed the base-tracks and now need to begin to put it together in a music video style by cutting and taking away clips so they continuously have good and timed jump cuts.

Additional Information:
When editing we decided that me and Amirul will edit the base-tracks taking it in turn to do some. the reason to this is that we want to make sure we develop our skills and transfer each others knowledge of using Final Cut Pro. and applying what we know to aid each other in the editing.

A Change in Costume and Synergy!

Setbacks and Basetracks!

After finishing all the filming in the half term holiday, we only had a few base-tracks to film left which was the sitting down scene outside in a cafe. After waiting a week to film on the day back from the holidays, we did not receive an email off the manager of the cafe we wanted to film at. This essentially meant we had nothing to do in that lesson which is why we decided to sync all of our footage with our song. 

This is where another problem occurred which was the footage we filmed on my DSLR camera. The format on my camera was different to the college camera and as my camera was different it needed to render every time put into my Final Cut Pro. This would've meant our whole edit would take forever as we had 30 base-tracks which would've needed rendering. However, after speaking to the technicians, we were able to change the format of the footage to something more suitable for Final Cut Pro by using QuickTime player. The whole conversion for the footage took approximately 1hr and 30min.

 As I tested it on Final Cut Pro, the footage worked fine when I tried to sync all the base-tracks without any need to render. I also exported a small piece of the music video with the music synced to see if there were any other problem need to be attended to. The quality of the footage did not deteriorate as I thought it would and the shots looked as good as I thought they would. 

I recalled what I learnt last year about how to use base-tracks. You simply choose a point in the song that is the most significant and mark it. You then do the same with footage recorded and mark the same bit in the song. Once done these markers will snap into place making it all in sync!

Promotion in a Concert!

So on the 4th of November 2013, I was volunteering for a charity concert organised by Human Appeal. The concert, Sounds of Light is a 12 day tour held across the UK as they aim to raise funds and awareness for the crisis in Syria. This concert featured 3 artists who are seemingly popular within the Islamic community therefore a lot of attention was gained for these concerts. The artists included Harris J, Raef and Maher Zain. While, they also help raise funds, they also help promote themselves as artists as if an individual isn't aware of them and they attend the concert then they obviously will. With the help of the artists and generous donations, London was able to raise £435,000 for Syria alone and with all 12 days in total, Human Appeal will be able to help Syria with an amazing amount of £3,105,000! =D

The concert will help promote the artists image, their intention and finally their music. I will use Maher Zain as the prime example as he is the most popular artist out of the three. Also, I wasn't that knowledgeable about him until I volunteered.  One way he was established as the main artist of the concert is through the flyers and posters which were distributed. On the flyer/poster, his image was the biggest compared to the rest so the attention was on him. This essentially helped promote the event whilst it also promoted Maher Zain as an artist as the flyers/poster were located all over the UK.

Maher Zain's music revolves around R&B as he also sings, produces and writes his own music. His music was also available to buy within the concert grounds as did the other artists albums. However, there was more emphasis on Maher Zains music which had the biggest display. A concert venue is fundamentally a great way to make album sales and raise funds for the artist or the cause itself. Being a Muslim artist makes him more desirable for Muslims to listen to Maher Zain as they feel he will sing about things important to their lives as well as his which helps in the making of a relationship of a fan and artist. 

Lastly, as the concert is live, it requires the artist to connect and build a rapport with their audience. This will be a great way for him to gain a new audience as he promotes his image to them. This is a great way to push fans to support his music and himself as they will feel special that Maher Zain has connected with them. This demonstrates that a concert is not only good for promoting music and such but also helps promote the image of the artist.
